The Eye of Mt Diablo

Postby jay st » Mon Jan 02, 2017 2:09 pm

The eye of Mt Diablo was a beacon or light on top of Mt Diablo that was lit by famous pilot Charles Linburg in 1928 to help pilots navigate. It was turned off on Dec 8 1941 after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and not turned on again till 1964. On a 1935 Standard Oil map of the bay area it is listed as the "Standard Oil Beacon". Now the light is lit only once a year on Dec 7th.

Standard Oil was the company that installed the beacon. They installed many beacons on the west coast to promote night flying as they developed a new aviation fuel and wanted to sell it by making it safe for pilots to fly anytime, not just day time.

Here's a photo of a 1935 Standard Oil map, showing The Standard Oil "Diablo beacon" noted on the map.
