Example words that were about as rare as "brownette" are "bodacious", "brainlessly", "bibbling", and "buckeroo":

The idea that a male of relatively young age would use this word is therefore almost unheard of. He certainly wasn't attempting to write brunette. Getting the respective eye color correct, as mentioned above, combined with phrases used in the Confession letter, what odds on the author being a woman. I don't subscribe to this, but neither rule it totally out.
Elements of the letter have a style of femininity. A letter, not unlike the JonBenet Ramsey case, where the author uses words and sentences I personally wouldn't attribute to a male, including 'brownette' and 'little store'. It is almost over descriptive.
